Micro scale exchange processes between surface and subsurface water

چکیده
Data are presented of experiments with turbulent open channel flow over rough surfaces and large relative submergence, which are conducted in two series with different geometric boundary conditions. During the experiments an oscillating fluid motion in the uppermost filter layer is visualised by the injection of a tracer dye. It is shown that this oscillating fluid motion is driven by highly unsteady pressure gradients and contributes to inand outflow at the interface between surface and subsurface flow, but its intensity decays rapidly with increasing filter depth. About 90% of the high frequency pressure fluctuations measured at the surface of the filter layer are damped at a filter depth of about 4–5 times the average gravel size of the surface of the bed. It is assumed that the considered high frequency oscillations originate from turbulent pressure fluctuations in the near bed layer. The exponential function that fits the decay of turbulent pressure fluctuations implies a length scale of about 12 times the geometric roughness height as dominant wavelength of a turbulent structure, which imposes a pressure fluctuation on a riverbed. The presented results reveal that micro scale advective transport between surface and subsurface flow occurs separate from diffusive effects and should be considered for the transfer of solutes like dissolved oxygen from fresh to subsurface water and its respiration in the uppermost sediment of aquatic beds. q 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Geological controlling soil organic carbon and nitrogen density in a hillslope landscape, semiarid area of Golestan province, Iran
The effects of geological conditionwere assessed on density of Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) and Nitrogen (N)in a sequence of hillslope landscape, derived from different lithology i.e. loess deposit, reworked loess, marl with mixed siltstone and shale, reddish brown clay deposits and older loess in the semiarid area of northern Iran. However, other factors can influence SOC and N density such as la...

[1] Hyporheic exchange is an ecologically important process, controlling the nutrient supply in the upper sediments and thus benthic habitat quality. Hydraulic exchange at a riffle-pool sequence in the Lahn River, Germany, was analyzed using HEC-RAS to simulate the surface water flow as a boundary for the subsurface flow and MODFLOW, MODPATH, and MT3DMS to reproduce the transport in the subsurf...

Conventional material removal of BK7 optical glass will normally result in brittle fracture at the surface, generating severe subsurface damage and poor surface finish. Subsurface damages induced by grinding strongly influence the mechanical strength and optical quality of optical glasses. However, through ductile mode grinding it is possible to reduce the surface and subsurface cracks. It is m...

متن کاملA multiscale model for integrating hyporheic exchange from ripples to meanders
[1] It is necessary to improve our understanding of the exchange of dissolved constituents between surface and subsurface waters in river systems in order to better evaluate the fate of water‐borne contaminants and nutrients and their effects on water quality and aquatic ecosystems. Here we present a model that can predict hyporheic exchange at the bed‐form‐to‐reach scale using readily measurab...
